But first: Why such extraordinary claims for which support is so thin? I think there are two reasons. The first is that, in an attempt to legitimate ayahuasca use, its proponents invoke the culturally resonant trope of a millennia-old indigenous wisdom. The second is the odd affectation of European colonialism that indigenous people are without history —that, unlike Europeans, they are unchanging in their isolation and innocence. It then follows that the practices of present-day indigenous peoples must reproduce the practices of thousands of years ago. Both reasons, I believe, malign the creativity, adaptability, and ingenuity of indigenous cultures.

During his high school years in the early 1980s, Gordon Todd Skinner often showed up to Cascia Hall Preparatory School in his blue blazer, with the school crest proudly emblazoned on his chest. On free dress days, he wore a karate gi, or sometimes a tux, to school. A classmate of Skinner’s recalls seeing him arrive in a 1957 Bentley S1. He wore a full-length camel-hair coat.

In an Andean community realities are closer to earth than they are in the city, it is more important that the cattle do not die than to have more private possessions. Hence in the country there is a better understanding of the shamanic meaning of the ceremony, the re-establishing of relationship to nature. Drugs, including some that cause physical dependence , have been used with entheogenic intention, mostly in ancient times, like alcohol. Common recreational drugs that cause chemical dependence have a history of entheogenic use, perhaps because their users could not access traditional entheogens, as shamans, considering non-visioning uses of their entheogens as hedonistic, were very secretive with them. A 2011  prospective study  by Roland R. Griffiths and colleagues suggests that a single high dosage of psilocybin can cause long-term changes in the  personality  of its users. About half of the study participants—described as healthy, “spiritually active”, and many possessing  postgraduate degrees —showed an increase in the personality dimension of  openness  (assessed using the  Revised NEO Personality Inventory ), and this positive effect was apparent more than a year after the psilocybin session. According to the study authors, the finding is significant because “no study has prospectively demonstrated personality change in healthy adults after an experimentally manipulated discrete event.” [12]  Although other researchers have described instances of psychedelic drug usage leading to new psychological understandings and personal insights, [13]  it is not known whether these experimental results can be generalized to larger populations.
